Engaging rental trucks for moving involves some details worth noting now so you can interact with the moving truck rental companies like an expert. Beyond the usual questions of what size truck to reserve when and so on, there are such gems as asking if your truck will need to go through weigh stations, calling the state police of each state you’ll be traveling through (that is, if you require an interstate truck rental), and more.
1. While shopping for truck rental companies, look for money-saving special promotions but of course don’t let that be your only selection criterion.
2. Look for companies that take pride in keeping their trucks and towing equipment in top condition. They may charge a bit more but this all relates to your safety and efficiency in getting where you need to go without problems, so it’s worth it to be picky and to choose a picky company.
3. Ask if you can get an unlimited mileage rental. If not, find out the cost of extra miles above whatever limit is involved.
4. Although you can do most everything online from research to reservations, it’s best to also get on the phone and even visit the truck rental company before putting your money on the table. Even the idea that you want your truck to be in top shape implies that a visit would be wise.
5. Before signing the rental agreement, inspect the truck you want to reserve. Look for the slightest damage right down to the smallest scratch and record it on the inspection form they’ll want you to fill out. Also check to see that the door handles and locks are working. If you fail to document any problems, the company may charge you for them when you return the truck.
6. When you call before visiting, ask what they offer for accident, limited loss and damage insurance. Before purchasing insurance from them, call your insurance agent to see if your automobile policy covers you for rental moving trucks and if so, compare the nature of the coverage and the prices. As to cargo insurance, you get adequate coverage through your agent or a specialist that is not being offered by the rental companies. There’s an article about that elsewhere in this blog inder Safety and Insurance Tips.
7. When you pick up the truck on moving day you’ll be asked to show your driver’s license, a major credit card, and proof of insurance.
8. Depending on the size of the moving truck rental and where you’re going, you might need to stop at weigh stations. Ask the rental company if they know whether your truck is large enough that a weigh station visit would be a requirement. And if you’re moving out of state, call the state police in all the states you’ll be traversing and ask for the weigh station requirements for that state.
9. Be sure to get all the paperwork from the moving truck rental company before pulling out. This should include the rental agreement, driver’s trip report, and your completed truck inspection report at minimum. Also check to be sure the vehicle registration and proof of insurance are onboard with you in rental moving truck.
