Renting a truck to move your stuff to college? Here’s a quick overview of the most important ways to keep things simple, safe, and hopefully fun.
• Truck Size. A 12- or 16-footer should do the job.
• When to Reserve. Two weeks in advance is best. And choose a company that guarantees the reservation. Not all of them do.
• Travel Light. Take only what you honestly need.

• Moving Stuff You Need. Buy packing tape, bubble wrap and boxes; include furniture pads and a hand truck with your rental.
. Be careful. Never lift with your back. Instead, bend your knees and lift with your legs.
• About your driving. Be highly aware that trucks are wider, taller and way heavier than cars. Meaning you must watch carefully for what you will be passing under, like bridges, trees, overhangs at gas stations and drive-up windows etc. And realize that a loaded truck needs way more more stopping distance than a car, meaning keep as far behind the next vehicle as you can get without moving so slowly as to cause a hazard.
. When you leave the rental lot, practice driving the truck through some nearby streets before you take it home to load up. Get a good feel for how it handles.
. Come moving day, pack a travel bag to keep with you in the cab. It should include the truck rental paperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, some water and some snacks to see you through.
Good luck with your DIY rental truck for moving to college!
