The moving truck rental process isn’t the first step for relocating your household or business, is it. There’s all the advance arrangements for stopping and starting services like utilities, phone and trash pickup before you even get to actual moving day. But there’s also a way to plan and prepare for the move itself, and here are some tips that will make a big difference in minimizing the stress and maximizing the efficiency of it all.
Your advance moving plan will streamline the whole operation. It should include not only a list of things to do but also a list of supplies you’ll need for packing. Boxes, tape, packing materials like newsprint, bubble wrap, foam peanuts and/or foam sheets. It should also include an inventory that lists the boxes and what they contain as you finish packing each one. This list would be broken down according to the room the belongings belong in.
Pack your belongings room by room. Clearly label each box with a big black marking pen according to which room this stuff belongs in and a summary of what’s in the box. As fundamental as this seems, it is the magic key to simplifying, speeding and easing the huge job of unpacking and getting settled in your new home.
Start packing as early as possible before moving day. Pack up everything you don’t use often enough to matter. ![]()
One packing rule of thumb is to place light items in big boxes and heavy items in small boxes. Makes sense doesn’t it. Or of you must mix heavy and light, which of course you will, then be sure to place the heaviest things in the bottom. Don’t overload the boxes. Keep them under 40 pounds but frankly, under 25 is even better.
If you have a hallway or garage, use them as a focal collection point for all the boxes you’ve packed. Think of this as the loading ramp for the rental moving truck. Now you’re talking. This is bona fide professional efficiency.
For all the techniques and details of packing boxes and protecting furniture and handling large appliances, see other articles on this website in the Packing How-Tos category.
Load the truck in a logical sequence: what you need least goes in first, up front next to the cab. Furniture and large appliances last so they come off first. Why, because much of the furniture holds the stuff that’s in the boxes, so it goes in the new house first. Again, makes sense doesn’t it.
And so, heh-heh, just as things go better with Coke, so does moving go better with prep. Good luck with your adventure in relocating to your new home with a do-it-yourself DIY rental moving truck!
