Renting a moving truck means you’ll be doing your own packing, so here’s a handy checklist for packing your breakable dinnerware.

Packing dishes for move

Packaging Supplies:

  • Threaded tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Newsprint (not newspapers; the ink will smudge tour stuff)
  • Cardboard boxes (include compartmentalized bottle boxes from liquor store for your glassware if you can get some)
  • Foam peanuts

How to Pack Glassware and Cups:

  • Wrap each piece of glassware including vases individually. Stuff them with foam, bubble wrap or paper inside, then lay down a sheet of the same packing material flat and roll the piece until it is completely wrapped in several layers.
  • Lay a layer of foam or bubble wrap in the bottom of  the box.
  • Stand each piece of glassware upright in the box.
  • If the box is deep enough for two rows of glassware, lay a layer of cardboard and a layer of foam or bubble wrap on top of the bottom row before adding the second row.
  • Fill in any empty space above the second layer with more packing materials until you’re sure the contents won’t shift; then tape the box shut with the threaded packing tape.
  • Label the box FRAGILE, THIS SIDE UP, showing the room it belongs in and the contents.

 How to Pack Dishware:

  • Wrap each piece in newsprint or foam.
  • Stand each piece on its edge, not laying flat, inside the box.
  • Fill any gaps tightly with foam peanuts.
  • Close the box with packing tape, and don’t forget to label!

But now which is better packing material? See video, then decide. Oh, and now you’ll know why plates must travel on their sides, and glasses stand upright, if you didn’t know before.

From the Blog-O-Sphere…

Pack It In Wrap all your breakables up in a cushiony layer of softness to keep them in one piece during the move. Newspaper will work fine for most things. If you don’t want to get newsprint on your dishes and glassware though, use towels or plainpaper.

Packing Glassware I’ll illustrate wrapping sherbet dishes, drinkware and plates, but the method is basically the same for all your breakables. The key is to have lots of packing material in the bottom and top of the box and each piece wrapped.
