Did you know that the family dog will handle the stresses of moving better if you do-it-yourself with a rental moving truck? It’s true, because you’re not bringing a parade of strange moving guys into your home to upset the environment your dog holds so dear. But no matter which moving method you use, your dog will be happiest if you remember the tips below.

The best way to limit the stress of moving your household for both people and pooches is problem prevention. For example…

* Before moving, inspect the fencing at your new home for holes or loose spots where the dog could escape.

* Find out if the new neighborhood has ticks or heartworm infestations, and if the property itself has flea infestation. If there are fleas, the seller should have the place fumigated before you move in.

Plan ahead for your dog* Find out where the nearest animal emergency center is.

* Ask your veterinarian if he can recommend a vet close to your new home.

* Get a copy of your dog’s medical history and all vaccination certificates from your vet.

* Your dog’s last feeding before the move should be about four hours ahead of time to minimize the possibility of motion sickness.

* It’s best to keep dogs contained and with towels in the container to soak up any salivation.

One way moving with dogs* If your dog has never traveled by car, take it on several short trips on a highway or freeway where you don’t have to make lots of stops, because repeated braking and accelerating can make a dog uncomfortable if not car sick.

* If you’re moving farther than just across town, take water and a water dish. That means stopping for potty breaks along the way, and keeping the dog leashed when you do.

* Keep a picture of your dog among your most important papers in case your dog escapes from your new home.
